Biomonitoring of the Application of Monoculture and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) Using Macrobenthic Structures at Tembelas Island, Kepulauan Riau Province, Indonesia

Abstract: Sustainable aquaculture needs to be considered when it comes to the utilization of water resources. The aim of this study was to apply biomonitoring using macrobenthic structures on both spatial and temporal applications of monoculture and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) at Tembelas Island, Kepulauan Riau Province, Indonesia. Samples of sediment were taken from three fish farm locations, namely from an IMTA site, a monoculture site, and a reference site. Macrobenthic organisms obtained through rins… Show more

“…Further analysis using the EWS-3SWJ software showed a light to moderate level of disturbance, as shown in Table 2. This software combines abiotic (water and sediment quality) and biotic data (macrobenthos structure and opportunistic taxa) to assess the level of disturbance, and it has been effectively described the level of disturbance at tropical coastal regions [34,35,12]. The reference locations both on the first and second sides indicate a slight level of environmental disturbance, while the IMTA farms location indicates minor disturbances on the first side, but moderate disturbances in the second sampling.…”

“…Sustainable aquaculture requires innovation and good environmental management, whereas aquaculture productivity depends on the project and an appropriate method to reduce its impact on the aquatic environment (Putro et al, 2020). Thus, knowing the ecological aspects that are involved in the commercial breeding of aquatic organisms becomes an important tool to make aquaculture more productive and less impactful.…”
