“…Sugar degradation is likely involved in energy generation for the bacteria. Polyamines are linked to bacterial growth and survival by reducing oxidative stress (Murray Stewart et al ., 2018) which could be generated by the presence of the hemocytes (Castillo et al ., 2020). Production of critical metabolites by the hemolymph microbiome could support sustainable production of these metabolites.…”

“…We hypothesize that hemolymph microbiome could be a third player in the interaction between the snail and its schistosome parasite. The hemolymph is known to be involved in snail defense against schistosomes by the action of hemocytes and humoral factors [53]. Snail genetics has also been shown to be a major determinant of snail resistance [15].…”

“…Some strains of B. glabrata, such as the NMRI and M line, are also susceptible to the infection by S. mansoni [22,23], while resistant strains such as BS-90 also allow infection with S. mansoni miracidia, though it does not lead to production of cercariae [24,25]. Snails have innate immune defense systems that can specifically or non-specifically target schistosomes for destruction [26,27]. Even following successful infection, miracidia and sporocysts are exposed to humoral factors, and attacked by motile hemocytes in the hemolymph and other tissues of the snail [28], resulting in production failure of cercariae.…”
