BIOPEP-UWM Virtual—A Novel Database of Food-Derived Peptides with In Silico-Predicted Biological Activity

Abstract: The novel BIOPEP-UWM Virtual database is designed as a repository of peptide sequences whose bioactivity or taste information was the result of in silico predictions. It is a tool complementary to the existing BIOPEP-UWM database summarizing the results of experimental data on bioactive peptides. The layout and organization of the new database are identical to those of the existing BIOPEP-UWM database of bioactive peptides. The peptide data record includes the following information: name; sequence and function… Show more

“…Peptides were identified using MS peaks, and those that were reproducible in independent replicates with a probability of >50% were used for further analysis. The source of the peptides and their physiochemical, bioactive, and bitter properties were analyzed using the BLAST, 26 PepDraw 27 and BioPep 28 databases. ToxinPred was used to predict the toxicity of the peptides.…”

“…This approach complements the traditionally applied prediction methods, which majorly simulate enzymatic cleavages. In those, the action of specific proteases on the protein is simulated to obtain the hydrolysate sequences, which are further investigated for bioactivities based on a database, such as BIOPEP-UWM [ 66 , 67 , 68 ] or CAMP R3 [ 69 ].…”

“…[1][2][3]7,11 Currently, a database called the 'BIOPEP-UWM Virtual database' reported 4474 bioactive peptides, 533 sensory peptides and 163 virtual peptides, and this database is being frequently updated. 12,13 Bioactive peptides are formed by hydrolysis catalysed by proteases, 14,15 which are important enzymes used and produced by the biotechnology industry accounting for about 60% of the global market, with applications in detergents, leather processing, food and feed processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and waste treatment. 16 In foods, proteases have two main applications: in the processing of traditional food products and in the processing of new protein-based ingredients, which due to their characteristics can be called functional foods.…”
