The agricultural sector is confronted with the formidable challenge of providing sustenance for a global population of 9 billion individuals by the year 2050, all the while mitigating adverse ecological and societal impacts. An attempt to address this difficulty has been made through the implementation of organic farming practices, which have yielded predominantly favorable results. Nevertheless, there are still certain obstacles that need to be addressed. Organic agricultural practices exhibit lower yields compared to conventional methods, while concerns persist regarding greenhouse gas emissions and fertilizer leaching. This paper provides an overview of existing organic and conventional agriculture systems and proposes that agroforestry, a deliberate integration of trees and shrubs with crops or livestock, may represent a promising avenue for advancing sustainable agriculture. Agroforestry possesses the capacity to sustain productivity and concurrently provide many ecosystem services through the use of nature-inspired methods. This study presents an overview of the prevalent methods and products associated with agroforestry, while also highlighting the positive environmental and social impacts it brings about. The present study aims to examine the obstacles encountered in the implementation of agroforestry practices and to suggest potential strategies for policy modification that could enhance the uptake of such practices among farmers. The findings of this review study indicate that agroforestry emerges as a very effective land use strategy for addressing both food security and environmental degradation concerns.

Field peas (Pisum sativum L.) are a valuable source of protein and help to support crop biodiversity in a sustainable agriculture system. To maintain varied crop rotation in sustainable production, it is advisable to include the winter form of pea, which is an excellent alternative to the spring form. However, the prolonged development of winter peas when weather patterns are unfavorable can adversely affect the morphological features and the health of the plants. The literature lacks studies on this issue. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics, yield, and canopy health of selected cultivars of winter peas. The study was conducted at the Prusy Experimental Station of the University of Agriculture in Krakow, located near Krakow, Poland (50°07′28″ N, 20°05′34″ E), during two growing seasons. The study evaluated six cultivars of winter peas and two means of protecting the canopy, with biological products containing Pythium oligandrum (Polyversum WP) or Bacillus subtilis (Serenade ASO). The yield, yield structure, efficiency of N uptake, and health of the plants were assessed. Crop protection treatments using Polyversum WP and Serenade ASO were shown to effectively protect winter peas against Fusarium wilt, which occurred only in the Specter and Arkta cultivars sprayed with Serenade. Polyversum WP increased the productivity of winter peas on average by 0.5 t ha−1 and increased the efficiency of nitrogen uptake on average by 10 kg ha−1 in comparison to the control. The Aviron and Arkta cultivars are recommended for cultivation in the conditions of Central Europe due to their high yield potential, high efficiency of nitrogen uptake, and good canopy health.

Summary Over the past few years, both producers and consumers have become increasingly interested in organic farming because conventional agriculture relies so heavily on the use of synthetic pesticides, thus causing environmental pollution. Weeds, as inevitable "companions" of cultivated plants, represent a major, everlasting issue in plant production. As organic plant production is legally regulated, the control of undesirable plants such as weeds is further complicated. Using the relevant literature, the purpose of this study is to survey the existing weed control methods in organic crop production. In order to be certified, organic plants have to be grown in the farming system without the application of synthetic herbicides and other chemicals that are commonly used in conventional production. This means that crop growers have to apply non-chemical, alternative methods of weed suppression, i.e. weed control based on the combination of cropping practices, mechanical control, and the use of bioherbicides. There is a large number of plant extracts with bioherbicidal activity, the effect of which is mostly attributed to the biological phenomenon of allelopathy, rendering such weed control sustainable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. Although bioherbicides are successfully used in organic farming worldwide, there are no registered bioherbicides in Serbia to date (according to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia). Both organic producers and experts should raise awareness of the importance of successful weed control to the health of cultivated plants, soil, beneficial organisms, and the entire ecosystem, which requires further research attention.
