Biopharmaceutical innovation ecosystems: a stakeholder model and the case of Lombardy

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine biopharma innovation ecosystems (IEs) through the lenses of a stakeholder model. In doing so, this work aims to answer the following research question: which stakeholders are required in an IE within biopharma industry and what are their main roles in the IE value creation. The research strategy was designed according to the grounded theory methodology. By applying this methodology, data were collected through verbatim interviews with several stakeholders. Both data coll… Show more

“…Corporations are increasingly focusing their innovation efforts on specific locations where innovation and entrepreneurial activity are particularly high within their technological domain, leading to the development of innovation ecosystems (IEs). This shift represents a departure from the traditional model of a single firm bringing breakthrough ideas to the market and instead involves large enterprises becoming nodes in a larger network [18][19][20]. Following this trend, the number of publications aiming to contribute to the IE literature has increased exponentially [21].…”

“…Following this trend, the number of publications aiming to contribute to the IE literature has increased exponentially [21]. The concept of an IE refers to a network of interconnected firms centered around a focal enterprise or platform and involves a complex multilevel theoretical framework that highlights the interactive nature of innovation and the interactions between social and economic agents [18][19][20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…Comparable with the pharma industry, the medtech industry has a complex innovation process associated with making safe products, e.g., [34]. In the sense of benefit versus risk, the development and innovation process for new medtech products is similar to the drug development process [53] These features are included in the clinical readiness level and subsequently in the innovation model proposed in this paper.…”

“…Since health care technology is used on humans, special demands and regulations need to be considered to ensure safe equipment [33]. This makes it challenging to succeed with inventions and innovation development [34]. It is challenging to navigate in the development process to quickly proceed from an initial idea to a certified medical equipment on the market.…”

“…The pharmaceutical industry differs from any other technology-intensive industry due to its high complexity and tacit-knowledge-intensive innovation environment, as well as the inherent difficulties and non-linear innovation processes [ 10 ]. In research on the innovation development of specific industrial clusters, the formation, growth, and sustainable development of clusters are taken as the main object.…”
