“…The concentrations of acetate, propionate, and butyrate in the permeate comprised 35, 32, and 18% of the total VFAs (Table S3). The VFA yield in the rumen AnDMBR was at the high end of the VFA yields reported in other fermentation studies treating food waste (0.3–0.5 g VFA g VS fed –1 ). However, the rumen AnDMBR was operated with an HRT of 0.50 ± 0.08 days (other systems usually have an HRT above 5 days ) and with an OLR of 18 ± 2 g VS L R –1 day –1 (other systems fed with food waste usually have a maximum OLR of 11 g VS L R –1 day –1 ), supporting our goal of designing a system with a small bioreactor footprint and high treatment capacity.
