“…Theory posits that individuals use, who use substances to cope with social anxiety do so to increase positive affect, decrease negative affect, help facilitate socializing, and/or avoid evaluation (Buckner et al, 2021). Thus, young adults who use substances to cope with social anxiety may expect or report experiencing specific positive consequences related to these areas (e.g., decreased social avoidance, having an easier time socializing with others) while being vulnerable to also experiencing negative consequences as a result of the type of substance they use (e.g., increased anxiety with cannabis, saying or doing something embarrassing with alcohol or cannabis).…”

“…It is theorized that individuals with elevated social anxiety use substances in part to cope with social anxiety symptoms, including fear of negative evaluation and social avoidance (Buckner et al, 2021). Coping motivated substance use is more common among individuals with clinically elevated social anxiety symptoms compared to those with nonclinically elevated social anxiety symptoms among both alcohol and cannabis-using samples (Buckner et al, 2012; Buckner & Heimberg, 2010), and coping motives largely explain the association between social anxiety symptoms and negative alcohol and cannabis-related consequences in cross-sectional work (e.g., Buckner et al, 2007; Buckner & Zvolensky, 2014; Cook et al, 2021; Walukevich-Dienst et al, 2020).…”

“…Whilst the current research did ask for use of medication, and other drug use a more precise record of which substances would enable more detailed analysis as it may be the combination of specific drugs and alcohol that has a particular impact on perception and emotion recognition (Fernández-Serrano et al, 2010). There are also developmental issues, psychological health and personality traits which are either genetic or the result of adverse childhood experiences which can impact emotion perception (Buckner et al, 2021;Tognin et al, 2020) and future research should assess as many as possible to improve the precision of the research. Whilst participants were asked to abstain from consuming alcohol for a minimum of 12 hours before the study an objective measure of blood alcohol levels would be beneficial to include in future research.…”
