Bioremediation of Polluted Soil Sites with Crude Oil Hydrocarbons Using Carrot Peel Waste

Abstract: The biostimulation potentials of carrot peel waste and carob kibbles for bioremediation of crude petroleum-oil polluted soil were investigated. Temperature, pH, moisture, total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), and changes in microbial counts during 45 days were monitored when 4 mL of carrot peel waste or carob kibbles media were added to 200 g of crude oil polluted soil samples. Gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) was used to compare hydrocarbon present in the crude oil polluted soil and in pure… Show more

“…Furthermore, organic amendments have been reported to increase the microbial population in soil and induce soil properties to regulate the soil microbial community [66,67]. The added amendments supplied nutrients for the growth of indigenous oil-degrading microorganisms in soil, which in turn increased the dehydrogenase enzyme activity [15,68]. In the present study, the highest dehydrogenase enzyme activity was observed in the treatment incorporating sunflower seed husk and poultry droppings.…”

“…Addition of nutrients as inorganic fertilizers such as NPK to soil is an effective method to control soil pollution. The added fertilizers make nitrogen and phosphorous available for hydrocarbonoclastic organisms of soil, which will eventually lead to the degradation of petroleum by microorganisms (Ijah et al 2003;Adenipekun et al 2005;Iquatt et al 2006;Hamoudi-belarbi et al 2018). Active carbon refiner is a suitable option for organic and inorganic pollutants (Bes et al 2008) and is widely used due to its high area to volume ratio, controllability of pore structure, heat resistance and ability to remove organic and inorganic pollutants (Tchobanoglous et al 2003).…”

“…PAHs are very dangerous for all living things, one of them for humans (Mohanty and Das 2018). Cellular functions can be affected by the cytotoxicity, carcinogenicity and mutagenicity of the chemicals, leading to various human diseases (Das et al 2014;Hamoudi-Belarbi et al 2018). Thus, great attention has been given to microbial bioremediation of crude oil from contaminated areas (Meliani and Bensoltane 2014).…”
