Biosecurity and more‐than‐human political economy: Veterinary interventions as productive economic forces in the ‘mozzarella landscape’ in Italy

Abstract: The growing pressure to increase food production (especially under capitalist market conditions) has generated the intensification of production in animal agriculture. This has brought on an inevitable specialisation (pork, beef and dairy production) due to the strong economic rationale in factory farming. Intensive animal agriculture, however, has created various socio-ecological risks (Okamoto et al., 2019) and consumer concerns. Veterinary expertise has a vital role in managing these risks and concerns thro… Show more

“…In short, we hope to encourage more empirical research on the laboratory or animal research site itself. Our observation is that while geographers routinely engage in researching the spaces where veterinary expertise is commonly evident, from the more‐than‐human family home (e.g., Fox, 2006 ; Power, 2008 ) to circulations of agricultural capital (e.g., Buller et al, 2020 ; Cseke, 2023 ; Enticott, 2012 ), the laboratory is a less often considered site for such research. For example, it may be that existing approaches in geography can be fruitfully applied to the laboratory.…”

“…Once again, the ethical boundary constructed in this narrative is between general practice and laboratory work. In general practice, part of a veterinarian's professional role may be to work with animal owners to negotiate between a 'Cadillac' versus a more affordable 'Ford Pinto' treatment plan (Morris, 2012, p. 175; and for a broader discussion of ways in which non-humans come to bear capitalist value, see also Clarke & Knights, 2018, 2022Collard & Dempsey, 2016;Hobson-West & Jutel, 2020). By contrast, the interview analysis suggests a lower burden of professional complexity in the animal research laboratory, with the veterinarian claiming to assume greater control over the form that animal care takes.…”

“…Buffalo farming is an important industry sector in Italy, with the most significant number of livestock residing in the Campania region [28], where this practice centres around the production of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP. This is often regarded as the "white gold" of the Mediterranean diet [29] and is ranked the fourth most exported Italian DOP product in 2020 [30]. The Campania region houses over 400,000 cattle units, which accounts for more than 75% of the national buffalo stock [31].…”

“…Political ecology, for instance, presents multiple opportunities for exchange between disciplines, between the global North and South, and between academia and activism. Taken broadly, it approaches natures as produced by political, economic, historical and cultural processes, and has proved remarkable in its depth and growing breadth (e.g., Bickerstaff, 2022; Bond et al, 2020; Bryant & Goodman, 2004; Connolly, 2020; Cseke, 2022; Davies, 2021; Faria et al, 2021; Gandy, 2022; Hope, 2021; Staddon, 2009). As these cited articles illustrate, Transactions already provides space to develop political‐ecological scholarship in ways that simultaneously extend and shift thinking and research in Geography.…”
