Biosensors for the Detection of Bacterial and Viral Clinical Pathogens

Abstract: Biosensors are measurement devices that can sense several biomolecules, and are widely used for the detection of relevant clinical pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, showing outstanding results. Because of the latent existing risk of facing another pandemic like the one we are living through due to COVID-19, researchers are constantly looking forward to developing new technologies for diagnosis and treatment of infections caused by different bacteria and viruses. Regarding that, nanotechnology has improve… Show more

“…GQD probes show excellent biocompatibility, and they easily penetrate the cell membrane and enter the cell owing to their small size. They constitute single or few layers of graphene particles that exhibit tunable surface functionality and long-term resistance to photobleaching ( Castillo-Henriquez et al, 2020 ; Alavi et al, 2021 ). GQDs based on an “off-on” FRET mechanism have been widely used in the detection of various microorganisms.…”

“…An optimum composition for high-antimicrobial activity against S. aureus , compared with E. coli bacteria was patented. For possible use as a fast absorbent carrier of anti-COVID-19 drug delivery, some researchers are trying to prepare scaffolding that would be able to carry such drugs while controlling the degree of a drug’s absorption by the human body—something that would be indispensable [ 240 , 241 ]. However, this new applied nanotechnology is not yet mastered for use with newly discovered drugs.…”

“…The development of a promising theranostic agent, which is safe and natural medicine with diagnostic capability, might be advantageous [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Over the last decade, different biosensing platforms accompanied by functional materials have been developed for various infectious and non-infectious diseases [ 9 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Among different functional materials, carbon dots (CDs) have gained enormous scientific attention in view of their unique physiochemical properties.…”
