Biosorption of cationic Hg2+ and Remazol brilliant blue anionic dye from binary solution using Gelidium corneum biomass

Abstract: Remazol brilliant blue (RBB) is an anthraquinone anionic dye that has several commercial uses, especially in the textile industries and is well-known for its detrimental impacts on marine life and the surrounding ecosystem. Mercury (Hg2+) is also one of the most severe hazardous environmental contaminants due to its bioaccumulation through the food chain and high toxicity to the human embryo and fetus. The biosorption potential of Gelidium corneum biomass for bioremoval of Hg2+ and RBB dye simultaneously from … Show more

“…BBR is a carcinogenic and mutagenic compound that poses a detrimental impact on human health [ 18 ]. Furthermore, the massive concentration of the BBR dye in the wastewater that was later discharged into the nearby water bodies limits the penetration of sunlight into the bottom part of the river, which in turn disturbs the aquatic ecosystem [ 19 ]. Therefore, treatment intervention is critical not only for aesthetics but also to protect aquatic biota.…”

“…In the first 15 min, the composite indicated a high adsorption rate, which was due to the presence of rich imprinted sites on MIIP at the preliminary phase, enabling the rapid identification and adsorption of ions. 41 As the adsorption process progresses, the available imprinting sites on the surface are gradually occupied by Rb + , and the adsorption rate gradually decreases until the equilibrium state. As described in Fig.…”
