Biosorption of Pb (II) and Zn (II) from aqueous solution by Oceanobacillus profundus isolated from an abandoned mine

Abstract: The present study investigated biosorption of Pb (II) and Zn (II) using a heavy metal tolerant bacterium Oceanobacillus profundus KBZ 3-2 isolated from a contaminated site. The effects of process parameters such as effect on bacterial growth, pH and initial lead ion concentration were studied. The results showed that the maximum removal percentage for Pb (II) was 97% at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L whereas maximum removal percentage for Zn (II) was at 54% at an initial concentration of 2 mg/L obtained a… Show more

“…On the other hand, at alkaline pH, the interaction of OH − groups with zinc positive charge ions leads to the formation of zinc hydroxide and decreasing biosorption capacity (Hadiani et al, 2018;Zinicovscaia et al, 2020c). Our findings are consistent with the results obtained from investigating Oceanobacillus profundus, Pseudevernia furfuracea, and S. cerevisiae, which implied an effective pH range of 2 to 8 (Mwandira et al, 2020) (Kılıç et al, 2014) (Farhan & Khadom, 2015;Wang, 2012).…”

“…This is in accordance with studies reporting that as the number of zinc ions increased, their absorption to the surface of the yeasts increased. Therefore, higher biosorption would be observed (Feng et al, 2018;Mwandira et al, 2020). The yeast cells grew in all the tested concentrations of zinc cations, showing acceptable resistance to zinc contamination up to 100 µg/mL.…”

“…The following factors may contribute to an increase in biosorption as temperature rises: an increase in the number of active sites involved in metal-ion uptake; an increase in the tendency of active sites to absorb metal ions; a decrease in mass transfer resistance in the diffusion layer due to a reduction in the diffusion boundary layer thickness around the biosorbent groups; or a change in the composition of the biosorbent groups [89]. In comparing our results with other natural sources, the maximum biosorption capacity of Zn +2 was 54, 83, and 87% by bacteria [102], fungi [103] and plants [50,104], respectively, while the obtained results from this study reached 98.74% efficiency by using the activated carbon of Ulva lactuca.…”

“…The carboxyl, phosphate, hydroxyl, and amino groups on the cell wall of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ASU6a are responsible for the fixation of Pb(II), while the amide, amino, hydroxyl, or carboxyl group on the Pb 2+ bond on the cell wall of Synechococcus sp. are involved in [22,23].…”
