The present work presents a detailed taxonomic study on Ostracoda from the Quiricó Formation, Areado Group, São Francisco Basin, Brazil. The samples were collected from three outcrops in the Minas Gerais State: Tereza Farm (João Pinheiro Municipality), and from the banks of the São José and Quiricó creeks (Presidente Olegário Municipality). Sixteen ostracode species were recovered: Harbinia alta, Harbinia aff. H. angulata, Harbinia aff. H. crepata, Harbinia aff. H. salitrensis, Harbinia symmetrica, Brasacypris fulfaroi, Brasacypris ovum, Cypridea conjugata, Cypridea hystrix, Cypridea infima, Cypridea jequiensis, Neuquenocypris (Protoneuquenocypris) antiqua, Penthesilenula martinsi, Penthesilenula pintoi new species, Alicenula longiformis new species, and Timiriasevia sanfranciscanensis new species. With the recovery of well-preserved specimens, it was possible to observe new characteristics in Brasacypris ovum, Cypridea conjugata, C. hystrix, and C. infima, and propose emendments to them. Additionally, three new species are described: Penthesilenula pintoi n. sp., Alicenula longiformis, n. sp., and Timiriasevia sanfranciscanensis n. sp. To date, the genus Timiriasevia had not been recorded in strata from Brazil. Also, Darwinula martinsi is reassigned to the genus Penthesilenula. Several species herein recorded are also found in other Brazilian continental basins, as well as in African and Argentinian basins, contributing to the knowledge of Brazilian Cretaceous continental deposits.

The lower succession of the Barbalha Formation comprises the “Camadas Batateira” which represent the first evidence of an anoxic lacustrine cycle.…”

Exceptionally well-preserved three-dimensional insects with fine details and even labile tissues are ubiquitous in the Crato Member Konservat Lagerstätte (northeastern Brazil). Here we investigate the preservational pathways which yielded such specimens. We employed high resolution techniques (EDXRF, SR-SXS, SEM, EDS, micro Raman, and PIXE) to understand their fossilisation on mineralogical and geochemical grounds. Pseudomorphs of framboidal pyrite, the dominant fossil microfabric, display size variation when comparing cuticle with inner areas or soft tissues, which we interpret as the result of the balance between ion diffusion rates and nucleation rates of pyrite through the originally decaying carcasses. Furthermore, the mineral fabrics are associated with structures that can be the remains of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Geochemical data also point to a concentration of Fe, Zn, and Cu in the fossils in comparison to the embedding rock. Therefore, we consider that biofilms of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) had a central role in insect decay and mineralisation. Therefore, we shed light on exceptional preservation of fossils by pyritisation in a Cretaceous limestone lacustrine palaeoenvironment.
Premise: The Lower Cretaceous Crato Konservat-Lagerstätte (CKL) preserves a rich flora that includes early angiosperms from northern Gondwana. From this area, the recently described fossil genus Santaniella was interpreted as a ranunculid (presumably Ranunculaceae). However, based on our examination of an additional specimen and a new phylogenetic analysis, we offer an alternative interpretation. Methods: The new fossil was collected from an active quarry for paving stones in the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. We assessed support for alternative phylogenetic hypotheses using a combined analysis of morphological data and DNA sequence data using Bayesian inference. We used a consensus network to visualize the posterior distribution of trees, and we used RoguePlot to illustrate the support for alternative positions on a scaffold tree. Results: The new material includes a flower-like structure not present in the original material and also includes follicles preserved at early stages of development. The flower-like structure is a compact terminal cluster of elliptical sterile laminar organs surrounding internal filamentous structures that occur on flexuous axes. Phylogenetic analyses did not support the fossil placement among eudicots. Instead, Santaniella appears to belong in the magnoliid clade. Conclusions: The presence of seeds in a marginal-linear placentation and enclosed in a follicle supports the fossil as an angiosperm. However, even though most characters are clearly recognizable, its combination of characters does not provide strong support for a close relationship to any extant order of flowering plants. Its position in the magnoliid clade is intriguing and, based on plicate carpels, it is definitely a mesangiosperm.
