Biotechnological solubilization of rock phosphate on media containing agro-industrial wastes

Abstract: Rock phosphate (RP) is an important natural material traditionally used for the production of phosphorus (P) fertilizers. Compared with chemical treatment, microbial solubilization of RP is an alternative environmentally mild approach. An overview of biotechnological techniques, mainly based on solubilization processes involving agro-industrial residues, is presented. Potential advantages of composting, solid-state fermentation, and liquid submerged fermentation employing free and immobilized microorganisms th… Show more

“…When bones or sludge from enhanced biological phosphorus removal (both have high level of phosphorus [3]) serves as a source of P in the cultivation of mircobes solubilizing P, additionally, organic form of carbon and other nutrients are supplied to the growth medium [30], making solubilizing process easier and more efficient. Biochar [31] or bones ash are other alternative sources of phosphorus, possible to use as raw material for fertilizers production in the case when microbes are utilized. Both of them are free of organic matter that can be used as a source of carbon for solubilizing phosphorus bacteria, but the content of P (P 2 O 5 ) is higher than in bone and sludge from EBFR [32].…”

“…For this reason, it is necessary to apply high doses of soluble fertilizers to reach the necessary concentrations of P in the soil solution (Narsian and Patel, 2000;Vassilev et al, 2012). One problem of intensive agriculture is that the fertilizers applied are expensive and their efficiency is very low (Vassilev and Vassileva, 2003;Paiva-Coutinho et al, 2012), making it unsustainable. Because of this, there is a pressing need to identify sustainable alternatives that may allow for a more efficient use of P for cultivated plants (Consensus Statement Declaration, 2011).…”

“…Depending on the soil condition and method of application, the wastage of conventional fertilizers with regard to plant nutrient uptake may reach up to 50% (Vassilev and Vassileva 2003;Entry and Sojka 2008). Most fertilizers contain watersoluble inorganic salts.…”
