Biplanar Shim Coil Design for 1.5 T Permanent Magnet of In Vivo Animal MRI

Abstract: This paper presents an approach of designing biplanar shim coils for a 1.5 T permanent magnet of in vivo animal MRI. The 1.5 T permanent magnet used in the system has two confronting circular poles, the diameter of which is only 200 mm. Active shimming method is applied to improve the magnetic field generated by the magnet. A series of biplanar shim coils are designed which degenerate magnetic field in the form of certain spherical harmonic terms. In this approach, to restrict the current distribution on the co… Show more

“…In general, for a high-field medical NMR imaging equipment magnet, the peak-to-peak value of the B 0 field in a spherical imaging volume (usually 50 cm diameter spherical volume (DSV)) should be less than 10 ppm [1]. High uniformity of the static magnetic field B 0 can be achieved in two ways: passive shimming, and active shimming.…”

“…According to measurements of the spatial distribution characteristics of the static magnetic field, the steel pieces are placed in low-field parts of the magnet, producing a magnetizing field in the DSV to compensate for the inhomogeneity of the B 0 field. Active shimming technology, which improves the magnetic field by adding the magnetic fields generated by a series of electrical coils to the static magnetic field B 0 , can achieve further improvements in uniformity [1,2].…”
