Birds and hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), with discussions about hypotheses on tick evolution

Abstract: SUMMARY.The relationship between birds (Aves) and hard ticks (Ixodidae) was analyzed for the 386 of 725 tick extant species whose larva, nymph and adults are known as well as their natural hosts. A total of 136 (54 Prostriata= Ixodes, 82 Metastriata= all other genera) are frequently found on Aves, but only 32 species (1 associated with Palaeognathae, 31 with Neognathae) have all parasitic stages feeding on birds: 25 Ixodes (19% of the species analyzed for this genus), 6 Haemaphysalis (7%) and 1 species of Ambl… Show more

“…A total of 136 hard ticks have been found on birds (Aves) so far. Larvae, nymphs and adults of 25 species of the genus Ixodes parasitize on birds, including the vectors of Lyme disease (5). During their longdistance migration, sometimes through thousands of kilometers, birds carry ticks far away from the nesting habitats.…”

“…Ticks are obligate blood-sucking parasites and harbor a myriad of diseases-causing pathogens that can affect both humans and animals (Service 2012). While ticks are often seen for their medical and public health importance, much remains to be investigated on their other essential roles in veterinary health and host-parasite ecology, especially in birds (Guglielmone & Nava 2017). The vultures of the Accipitridae and Cathartidae families are obligate avian scavengers that feed strictly on carcasses (Ruxton & Houston 2004).…”

“…Studies, focused on hosts of Ixodidae (hard ticks), reveal that birds play an important role in their life cycle and distribution (2,3). According to existing knowledge, 136 tick species have been frequently found on birds worldwide (4). Tick prevalence seems to depend mostly on bird`s foraging behaviour (5,6).…”
