Birth after preeclamptic pregnancies: association with allergic sensitization and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in late childhood; a historically matched cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundThe development of allergic sensitization and allergic disease may be related to factors during intrauterine life, but the role of maternal preeclampsia is not known. We studied if maternal preeclampsia is associated with long-term allergic sensitization, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, asthma and with altered lung function in late childhood.Methods617 children participated in a 1:2 matched and controlled historical cohort study; 230 born after preeclamptic pregnancies and 387 born af… Show more

“…The latter also found a weak inverse association between pre-eclampsia and forced expiratory volume in 1 s and maximal mid-expiratory flow, up to school age. These results are inkeeping with data on lung function in infants of a birth cohort in Australia [21] but not with the findings of a small cohort of children in Norway [22]. In children who wheeze very early in life, and in particular in those with recurrences, a congenital reduction in airway calibre/compliance seems to be a predisposing factor to wheeze [23,24].…”

“…Other factors that have been studied are caesarean delivery [19,20,21,22,23] and perinatal exposure to small amounts of CMP [24,25,26,27], though the results are conflicting. Other factors such as duration of BF [14,28,29], prematurity, threatened premature delivery, preeclampsia [30], hypertension, gestational diabetes [31], and antibiotics [21] during labor have been much less studied. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact different perinatal factors may have on the development of IgE-mediated CMA.…”

“…There is growing evidences that these diseases arise very early, even in intrauterine stage contributing to atopic diseases [11]. Emin et al [5] differently from what was observed in their studies believe that in allergic diseases the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are not affected simultaneously but one of them may be involved in a predominantly or exclusively form.…”
