Bis-Tris Propane as a New Polydentate Linker in the Synthesis of Iron(III) and Manganese(II/III) Complexes

Abstract: We describe the synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of two new complexes, one decanuclear iron(III) cluster and one hexanuclear mixed-valence manganese(II/III) cluster, where the previously unexplored polydentate ligand Bis-tris propane {(CH2OH)3CNH(CH2)3NHC(CH2OH)3} is used to link small cluster fragments into high-nuclearity complexes.

“…26-31 {(CH 2 OH) 3 CNH(CH 2 ) 3 NHC(CH 2 OH) 3 } (Bis-tris propane, H 6 L), a promising candidate with N 2 O 6 donor set, has been well utilized to fabricate 3d, 3d-3d, 4f clusters, [32][33][34][35] however, 3d-4f multinuclear complexes based on Bis-tris propane has never been documented until now. Furthermore, it has also been proved that flexible ligands can adopt diverse conformations according to the geometric requirements of metal ions, which may result in unexpected and fascinating structures such as polynuclear-based frameworks, novel topologies and chiral networks.…”

“…However, its use in cluster chemistry is rare. 10 Herein we report a Ni 4 cubane and a Co 5 complex that displays an unusual Co-O core topology. These represent the first Bis-tris propane-based complexes containing these metal ions: both complexes display ferromagnetic interactions leading to non-zero spin ground states for each cluster.…”
