“…Unfortunately, cyanobacterial diversity in Okinawa is largely unexplored, and only a few studies on the diversity or epidemiology of marine cyanobacteria have been conducted. For example, diversity studies have shown that marine macroscopic colony-forming filamentous cyanobacteria from Okinawan coasts are genetically very diverse (Suda et al 2013;Nuryadi et al 2020) (Yamashiro et al 2014) and black band disease in coral (Hutabarat et al 2018), respectively. However, to date, there have been no studies related to the description of new cyanobacterial taxa from coasts of Okinawa.…”

“…As a research community, we have extensively documented how several biotic and abiotic factors contribute to coral Cooney et al, 2002;Frias-Lopez et al, 2003, 2004Sekar et al, 2006Sekar et al, , 2008Barneah et al, 2007;Voss et al, 2007;Sato et al, 2010;Séré et al, 2016 Cyanobacteria Black band Frias-Lopez et al, 2003;Voss et al, 2007;Hutabarat et al, 2018 Cyanophyte pathogen Black band Rützler and Santavy, 1983 Desulfovibrio Black band Viehman et al, 2006;Brownell and Richardson, 2014 Geitlerinema species Black band Richardson and Ragoonath, 2008 Novel Vibrio species Yellow band (blotch) Cervino et al, 2004Cervino et al, , 2008 microbiome variability. For example, it is clear that the largest contributing factor of microbiome composition is host phylogeny (Rohwer et al, 2002;Chu and Vollmer, 2016;Pollock et al, 2018).…”

“…Currently, Roseofilum is comprised of two formally described species, the type species R. reptotaenium and R. corallyticum isolated from diseased coral tissues (Casamatta et al, 2012; Taylor, 1983). However, metagenomic sequencing work has captured Roseofilum in different environments across the globe (based on NCBI sequences), such as Pelorus Island (Australia), Miyako Island (Japan), Carrie Bow Cay (Belize), Luminao Reef Flat (Guam, United States), and Ft. Lauderdale (United States; Figure 1; Arotsker et al, 2009; Barneah et al, 2007; Buerger et al, 2016; Casamatta et al, 2012; Cooney et al, 2002; Frias‐Lopez et al, 2002; Hutabarat et al, 2018; Klaus et al, 2011; Meyer et al, 2016; Rasoulouniriana et al, 2009; Sato et al, 2010). Although the geographic distribution and chemical diversity of Roseofilum have been studied (Gunasekera et al, 2019; Meyer et al, 2023), there remains a lack of effort to elucidate species in the genus using a combination of morphological, molecular, and genomic data.…”
