Black/White Differences in Pressure Ulcer Incidence in Nursing Home Residents

Abstract: Blacks have a higher incidence of NH-acquired PUs than whites; resident characteristics appear to mediate the higher risk. Future research should aim to identify modifiable factors that explain differences between racial groups in PU risk and to develop solutions to prevent the suffering and cost associated with PUs.

“…The finding that PrU presence on admission predicted new PrU development was not surprising, given that 22 of 278 older adult patients (or 7.9%) with a PrU on admission developed a new PrU during the home health length of stay. Results are consistent with previous studies among long-term-care residents 29,44 and suggest that patients who are admitted with a PrU require interventions to prevent new PrU occurrence.…”

“…The studies on people in PC do not contain data relating to skin color. In other population groups, the results are divergent and studies sometimes indicate a higher prevalence among black and brown people and sometimes among white people (13,(15)(16) .…”

“…The characteristics of PU are shown in table 3. in palliative care (6)(7)(8)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) . In studies carried out in other countries, the prevalence of PU in people in palliative care (PC) ranged from 10.5 to 26% (6)(7)(8)12) .…”

“…This is further complicated by differences in PU detection by resident race. Studies have shown a much lower incidence of stage 1 PUs in Black residents than in White residents but show the converse with respect to stage 2 PUs (5,40). Black residents are also more likely to have multiple PUs (73).…”
