“…It is known that the internal and external urethral sphincters (EUS) are vital for urinary control. The internal urethral sphincter functions as a unit with the trigone and bladder base to store urine and is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system via the hypogastric nerve (T 10 –L 2 ), while the EUS and skeletal muscles are controlled by parasympathetic and somatic motor neurons via the pudendal nerve (S 2 –S 4 ) 18 , 19 . The EUS is comprised of inner smooth muscle surrounded by outer skeletal muscle, which contains both slow- and fast-twitch fibres, with the slow-twitch fibres being more important than the fast-twitch fibres for maintaining tonic force in the urethra.…”

“…This bowel‐bladder interaction may result in inadequate suppression of bladder activity by the cortical center, leading to detrusor overactivity and urgency. In addition, detrusor overactivity may cause overcontraction of the anal sphincter and aggravate constipation . The association between bowel symptoms and LUTS is defined as bladder and bowel dysfunction.…”

“…Research has shown that constipation is a risk factor for OAB [ 7 , 20 ], and our study supports this view. Constipation has been postulated to suppress the common nerves of the bladder and intestine, which leads to a lack of central nerve inhibition of bladder activity, resulting in bladder overactivity [ 21 ]. Constipation as a risk factor for OAB is not fully understood.…”
