Blended Polysulfone/Polyethersulfone (PSF/PES) Membrane with Enhanced Antifouling Property for Separation of Succinate from Organic Acids from Fermentation Broth

Abstract: Biofouling is a serious challenge in the separation of succinic acid from fermentation broth because of its complex mixture containing substantial amount of dissociated and nondissociated forms of dissolved organics, metabolites, residual mineral salts, and bacteria. A robust blended polysulfone/polyethersulfone (PSF/PES) membrane was fabricated and presented in this study for alleviating the challenges encountered during biobased succinic acid separation. PSF/PES membranes were fabricated at varying compositi… Show more

“…This is induced by the stretching vibration of N–H bonds existing in amide and/or amine groups of the PA-based membranes. , The absorption peak at 1577 cm –1 is produced by the bending vibration of N–H. , The density of this signal increases after membrane modification owing to a large number of −NH 2 /–NH– groups from PEI/TPEIs introduced into the membrane surface. The peak at 2866 cm –1 generated by the stretching vibration of C–H in −CH 2 groups of PEI exists for all modified membranes but is absent for PA-M. , The vibration of the thiophene ring in TPEI-1-M/TPEI-2-M appears at 720 cm –1 , which overlaps with the asymmetric stretching vibration of sulfone in PES. , FTIR analysis suggests that the sacrifice agents are successfully introduced into the PA surface.…”

“…Membrane pores offer the possibility for the passage of water molecules. The higher the porosity, the higher the water content of the membrane [29]. The result in Table 1 signifies that the pure Psf membrane (0 wt.% SSOD/Psf) has the lowest EWC and porosity compared to the SSOD-loaded membranes.…”

“…To examine how much water a membrane can absorb, the equilibrium water content (EWC) of polymer membranes is usually analyzed. EWC is directly associated with porosity and can be regarded as the level at which the membrane neither loses nor gains moisture [29]. EWC is calculated using Equation ( 1)…”
