Blending Surface Currents from HF Radar Observations and Numerical Modeling: Tidal Hindcasts and Forecasts

Abstract: An observation network operating three Wellen Radars (WERAs) in the German Bight, which are part of the Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas (COSYNA), is presented in detail. Major consideration is given to expanding the patchy observations over the entire German Bight on a 1-km grid and producing state estimates at intratidal scales, and 6- and 12-h forecasts. This was achieved with the help of the proposed spatiotemporal optimal interpolation (STOI) method, which efficiently uses observation… Show more

“…A number of publications already exists on the assimilation of surface HFR data (Breivik and Saetra, 2001;Paduan and Shulman, 2004;Barth et al, 2008Barth et al, , 2011Ren et al, 2015b;Sperrevik et al, 2015;Stanev et al, 2015;Iermano et al, 2016, to mention only a few examples). “…A growing number of European studies have been developed on the use of HFR data toward a better understanding of the surface ocean coastal dynamics (Shrira et al, 2001;Rubio et al, 2011;Schaeffer et al, 2011;Uttieri et al, 2011;Sentchev et al, 2013;Berta et al, 2014a;Shrira and Forget, 2015;Stanev et al, 2015;Falco et al, 2016). Moreover, since HFR data provide measurements of currents with a relatively wide spatial coverage and high spatial and temporal resolution in near real time (there are systems with lags of just 20 min, after generating the data), they have become invaluable tools in the field of operational oceanography.…”

“…The observation error specification is extremely challenging in the coastal zone; specific coastal processes necessitate the use of dynamically consistent errorprediction schemes (Stanev et al, 2015b). Most existing assimilation schemes assume unbiased observations with Gaussian noise, which is often unrealistic.…”
