“…This phenomenon is dependent upon the nerve supply to the distended area of the uterine horn. These observations suggest an interrelation between the uterus and the pituitary gland not unlike that involved in the neurogenic activation of the adenohypophysis which may result in the discharge of ovulating hormone (LH) in the rat (Everett, 1952), rabbit (Markee et al, 1952), cow (Hansel andTrimberger, 1951) and the chicken (Zarrow andBastian, 1953, van Tienhoven et al, 1954). It is said that the introduction of lead shot into the uterine horns of swine causes a cessation of estrous cycles and a general physiological state not unlike anestrus (Keller, 1924).…”

“…There are reports of androgen receptors in avian ( Yoshimura et al, 1995 ) and mammalian granulosa cells ( Hsueh et al, 1983 ). Nuclear estrogen receptor has been reported to be present in granulosa cells of the hen ( Zarrow and Bastian, 1953 ; Kamiyoshi et al, 1986 ). Action of steroid hormones, via nuclear receptors is required for long duration to induce de novo synthesis of protein ( Knecht et al, 1985 ).…”

“…In the hen, ovulation can be blocked by drugs, but pharma? cological details seem to differ from those seen in mammals: the barbiturates are inactive, but atropine and SKF-501 work (10 …”
