Blockchain Adoption in Food Supply Chains: A Systematic Literature Review on Enablers, Benefits, and Barriers

Abstract: Globalization of the food supply chain (FSCs) has brought significant challenges to the food system, such as fraud, safety, security, and quality issues due to information asymmetry. Globalization also increases the difficulty and complexity of solving these problems to improve FSC efficiency. Blockchain technology (BCT) has proven to have the potential to transform FSC based on its potential benefits. However, studies of BCT adoption in FSC are relatively new and scarce. This study systematically reviews the … Show more

“…Moreover, in addition to reviewing the factors affecting blockchain adoption, Happy et al [19] and Xie et al [18] considered the outcomes of blockchain adoption. Similarly, many previous literature reviews (e.g., [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]) looked into the benefits brought about by blockchain adoption in the supply chain. Kafeel et al [28], Shin et al [24], and Vu et al [25] also investigated the barriers or challenges that influence the adoption of blockchain technology.…”

“…The agri-food processes have been globalized in the modern food industry with changing marketing techniques and consumption trends. According to Mohammed et al (2023), globalization has increased the complexity and various challenges of the agri-food industry, such as the risk of food security, lack of infrastructure, finance, institutional support policies and food frauds which imbalance the structure and decrease the efficiency of supply chain processes. Weerabahu et al (2022) state that the agri-food supply chain is the complex flow of events from the farmer to the end consumer.…”
