Blockchain and Sustainability: A Tertiary Study

Abstract: Blockchain is an emerging technology with potential to address issues related to sustainability. Literature reviews on blockchain and sustainability exist, but there is a need to consolidate existing results, in particular, in terms of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This extended abstract presents an ongoing tertiary study based on existing literature reviews to investigate the relationship between blockchain and sustainability in terms of SDGs. Results from a pilot analysis of 18 reviews using thematic … Show more

“…Holistic sustainability as result of the utilization of sustainability knowledge is able to create the conditions for the development of sustainable innovation [87]. To analyze sustainable development goals, some studies examine the relationship between blockchain technologies and environmental sustainability [88][89][90][91], investigating the role of blockchain, which requires in-depth analysis of potential positive and negative effects on the environment. If the negative effects are explored in a few studies [2], just as key components that foster the transition from traditional systems to new sustainable systems, "blockchain for good" [92,93] is a responsible event influencing the way to operate some firms.…”

“…Several reviews, for example, [2], [9]- [14], [16]- [18], cover this topic from different angles. Therefore, we decided to perform a tertiary review to answer our research questions [20]. A tertiary review, or a tertiary study, is "a review of secondary studies related to the same research questions" [21, p. vii], i.e., a review of systematic literature reviews.…”

“…Based on the current state of practices and expectations from the stakeholders gathered from the above workshop, interviews and conversations, we extracted their concerns and goals using ArchiMate motivation models. The authors had performed a systematic literature review in parallel [10] [11] and gained familiarity with the literature about the blockchain use cases and applications, benefits and impacts that blockchain can contribute to supply chains, as well as the drivers and barriers to blockchain adoption. A short summary from the literature review is provided in Section 2.2.…”
