Research related to blockchain is rapidly gaining importance in the higher education. This opportunity collaborates with a proposal for a review of papers on the main blockchain topic. The bibliometric analysis included 61 peer-reviewed articles published in the Scopus database during the period of 2016 to 2021. This paper offers the identification of gaps in the literature enabling studies on the subject in higher education. The article identifies the main applications of blockchain technology in higher education around the world, as well as suggests future investigations. For further scientific investigation, we propose the operationalization of each of the researched approaches, especially combining the blockchain relationship, artificial intelligence, digital innovation, digital maturity, and customer experience in higher education.

The issuing and verification of higher education certificates, including all higher education documents, still functions in a costly and inappropriately bureaucratic manner. Blockchain technology provides a more secure and consistent way to revolutionize the widely used generalized mechanisms and system concepts. In this paper, the most necessary requirements are examined regarding a blockchain-based higher education system, based on the most well-known research papers. Moreover, the opportunities of working on an education system by maintaining a decentralized structure organization are recommended as well. This paper recommends the most suitable blockchain scaling solution for the architecture of an education system which uses the most state-of-the-art EVM (Ethereum virtual machine) compatible approach to implement the higher education system with all the predefined requirements. It is proven that the explained smart contract-based higher education system, which uses zkEVM (zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine), consists of all necessary functionalities and satisfies all predefined requirements. In fact, the recommended system, by using a modular blockchain structure, implements all the functionality and capability of the examined related works in one system, namely GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), which is compatible and more secure.

Estudos revelam que o processo de emissão de Diplomas de Conclusão de Curso no Brasil pode ser complexo, demorado e vulnerável a ataques. Em 2018, uma proposta do Ministério da Educação (MEC) trouxe ao Brasil o Diploma Digital, uma solução em formato XML assinado digitalmente, que tem como um de seus objetivos a redução dos casos de diplomas falsos. Entretanto, esta solução não abrange o acompanhamento do histórico escolar do aluno, etapa na qual também podem ocorrer fraudes. Mesmo soluções que utilizam tecnologias inovadoras, como a Blockchain, não contemplam toda a jornada do estudante ou não apresentam de maneira contundente um caminho viável para o salto tecnológico. Neste artigo, será apresentado um protocolo de emissão de créditos e diplomas inteiramente baseado na plataforma Hyperledger Indy, uma tecnologia Blockchain derivada da iniciativa Hyperledger e com foco em SSI (Self-Sovereign Identity). O protocolo proposto provê validade e rastreabilidade mesmo para diplomas anteriormente emitidos com tecnologias legadas.
