Blocking Probability Analysis for 5G New Radio (NR) Physical Downlink Control Channel

Abstract: The 5th generation (5G) new radio (NR) is designed to support a wide range of use cases, requirements, and services from enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) to ultra-reliable lowlatency communications (URLLC). NR signals are designed to meet stringent requirements, and in particular the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) which requires careful consideration. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis on the PDCCH blocking probability in a network where multiple users need to be scheduled for receiv… Show more

“…5G capacity calculations have been indirectly introduced in [16], presenting control channel resources and some simplified VoNR capacity calculations while comparing results with VoLTE. A more detailed study is provided in [17], where Blocking Probability of downlink control channel is obtained. Control mechanisms impact on VoNR is presented in [18], including some results from real-world tested scenarios.…”

“…Each CCE is composed by multiple Resource Element Groups (REGs), in turn made up of groupings of REs, which number vary for LTE and 5G. To simplify the calculations, a relationship between MCS and AL has been determined as a function of whether the radio conditions are optimal (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27), average (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21), bad (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14) or very bad (0-6). The corresponding MCS-AL mapping is defined in [18], as 2 for average conditions, 4 for bad, and 8 for very bad.…”

“…A REG is a set of 12 contiguous REs (or 1 RB) in one symbol duration [55]. A CORESET may span up to 6, possibly noncontiguous, RBs in frequency [55]- [56] and between 1 and 3 contiguous OFDM symbols in time.…”

“…The PDCCH finds applications in scheduling both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) data channels. It has a variety of specialized functions such as uplink power control, slot format indication, and preemptive scheduling [6,7]. Information carried on the PDCCH is called downlink control information (DCI) [6,7].…”

Information carried on the PDCCH is called downlink control information (DCI) [6,7]. To receive DCI via the PDCCH, the UE observes a collection of PDCCH candidates during one or more configured monitoring instances within designated control resource sets (CORESETs) according to specified search space set (SS-Set) configurations [6].…”
