“…These blood samples were stored on ice (<3 hr) and used to assess changes in DNA damage (comet assay), Cort (radioimmunoassay), and uric acid (fluorometric assay). Comet assays for all four‐time points were performed on whole blood immediately following the last (120 min) sample; note that while whole blood was used for this analysis, red blood cells are the most predominant cell type in avian blood (∼200 red blood cells: 1 leukocyte; Scanes, 2015) and, thus, measured DNA damage levels are representative of erythrocyte damage. Blood samples were then separated by centrifugation after which separate aliquots of plasma were frozen at −20°C to later test for Cort and uric acid.…”
