“…18 It was also shown that the reduced blood flow was not limited to the eye. 19 At least 3 population-based studies, including 2 among Asians, demonstrated that retinal arteriolar narrowing is related to POAG. 20 -22 Furthermore, it is now known that retinal arteriolar narrowing is related to risk factors for stroke such as chronic hypertension, 23 carotid artery stiffness, 24 and aortic distensibility.…”

“…Exclusion criteria were extreme morning or evening types (M/E-types) (ratings: Յ14 and Ն21 points), chronic or current major medical illness or injury, amenorrhea or irregular menstrual cycles, smoking, intake of over-the-counter or prescription medications (including oral contraceptives or other hormonal treatments) or illicit substances, shift work within 3 mo, or transmeridian travel within 1 mo prior to the study, or excessive caffeine (i.e., Ͼ300 mg) and alcohol consumption (i.e., Ͼ1 beverage per day). Subjects who fulfilled the described criteria were subjected to a finger nailfold video capillary microscopy to objectively document their self-ratings about cold or warm extremities, respectively (inclusion criteria: blood standstill for Ն12 s ϭ WVD, Ͻ12 s ϭ control) (23,27). Additionally, the nailfold skin temperature was measured.…”

“…One major contributor may be regulation of vascular tone. [2][3][4][5][6] For example, glaucoma patients have impaired blood flow and vascular autoregulation in eye tissues, [7][8][9][10][11] and exhibit impaired flow- 12 or acetylcholine-mediated 13 vasodilation in the brachial artery and reduced blood flow in finger nailfold capillaries, 14 suggesting systemic vascular abnormalities. Of note, POAG patients with initial paracentral VF loss are particularly more likely to have systemic vascular risk factors, such as hypotension and migraines.…”
