Blood donor selection and deferral pattern as an important tool for blood safety in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract: Context:Blood donor selection criteria based on science and regulatory rules influence donor as well recipient safety and demographics.Aim:To evaluate and analyze the blood donor deferral pattern and its causes among blood donors in a tertiary care hospital blood bank and to review its influence on blood safety.Settings and Design:Hospital based blood bank, retrospective analysis.Subjects and Methods:The data available as donor deferral record over a period of 13 years from 2001 to 2013 was analyzed. Results:Th… Show more

“…Anemia (low packed cell volume/hematocrit) was the major cause of temporary deferral (followed by syphilis) as well as the second leading cause of all deferral in the studied population. Similar finding has been reported in previous studies [2, 20, 23, 33, 54]. The implication of this finding is a high prevalence of anemia in the studied population.…”

“…The donor deferral rate of 10.6% in this study is comparable to other reports in the literature, ranging from 5% to 35.6%. [13][14][15][16][17] However, unlike other studies, the categorization of donor deferral in line with the donation process flow (Table 2) provides a better understanding of deferral reasons including high hemoglobin and tattooing, which are often overlooked but have significant implication on deferral rate.…”

“…Amongst stage 1 deferrals, underweight (8.14%) was the most frequent reason with high prevalence in student donors, while other Indian studies in literature ranged from 4.72% to 32.3%. 16,26 This shows that a significant proportion of donor pool in India comprises of motivated young donors. The other common reasons for deferral in this stage was alcohol consumption before blood donation (6.99%), medicine intake (4.68%) which includes shortterm antibiotic or analgesic followed by age factor (2.14%) and tattooing or ear-piercing (1.64%), a growing trend among young population.…”

“…Since all blood components and manufactured blood products originate with blood donors, the safety of blood transfusion begins with careful selection of donors. [3] Accordingly, donors should be managed in a way that ensures high standard of care.…”
