Background Blood transfusion is a life-saving intervention. However, the safety of the donor and the recipient is paramount. This study was aimed at determining the blood donation deferral pattern of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. Methods A retrospective analysis of the prospective donors’ data of University of Calabar Donor clinic within the period of March 2015 to February 2016 was conducted. Data were extracted from the donor register and analyzed. Prospective donors were screened and interviewed for causes of temporary and permanent deferrals. Result Out of the 1886 screened prospective donors, 164 (8.69%) were deferred. Though the minority of the donor population, female donors had the highest deferral rate (33.33%). There were 31.10 and 68.90% cases of temporary and permanent deferrals, respectively. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) was the highest (31.71%) cause of overall deferral as well as permanent deferral. Anemia was the major (21.95%) cause of temporary deferral as well as the second cause of overall deferrals. Commercial and replacement donors constituted 68.28 and 31.71% of the deferral cases, respectively. Conclusion HBV was found to be the overall leading cause of deferral in the studied area. This outcome poses a public health concern and should elicit measures to curb the infection rate.

Donor deferral results in loss of potential, motivated blood donors, and thereby, availability of blood for needy patients. This study analyses the frequency and reasons for donor deferral, including high hemoglobin deferral, which is underreported in India. Methods: Retrospective analysis of the deferral record of whole blood donors from January 2014 to December 2018 was performed with respect to the pre-donation screening process at our center. Accordingly, the deferrals are categorized as stage1-evaluation of Donor History Questionnaire (DHQ), stage 2-medical examination, stage 3-hemoglobin (Hb) check using copper sulfate method or a gradually implemented quantitative hemoglobin analyzer, and stage 4-before phlebotomy. Donor demographic details, donation frequency, and deferral reasons were noted. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20 (IBM, USA). Results: Of 99,680 pre-donation screenings, 10.6% was deferred. The highest deferral (56.02%) was at stage 3 (based on hemoglobin level) contributed by low (52.45%) and high (3.75%) hemoglobin deferrals against cutoff of 12.5 to 18 g/dl. High Hb was noted only in male donors when screened by hemoglobin analyzer. Further, a steady fall in low hemoglobin but a rise in high hemoglobin deferral rate owing to the gradual implementation of hemoglobin analyzer over the study period was noted. The deferrals in stage 1, 2, and 4 were 29.64%, 13.97%, and 0.36%, respectively. Overall, the deferral rate was higher in females (49.88%), and in first-time (13.63%), and 18 to 25 yrs age-group (4.25%) donors for low Hb, underweight, and tattooing/ear piercing. Conclusion: Insights on donor deferral reasons promote proactive measures towards donor recruitment and retention. Further, donor hemoglobin screening by quantitative method, if followed uniformly by all blood centers across the country, will help identify the true prevalence of high hemoglobin in Indian blood donors and ensures donor safety.

Background: Blood transfusion service is an indispensable component of health care. Despite the increased demand for blood, the supply of safe blood has been inadequate. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the pattern of blood donation practices among medical students in Abakaliki. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out at Ebonyi State University Abakaliki between October 2017 and March 2018. Stratified sampling technique was used to recruit participants from medical students using pre-tested, semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire, to assess their pattern of blood donation practices. Data was analysed using SPSS software, version 20. Results: One hundred and fifty eight medical students who participated in the study were made up of 90 (58.4%) males and 68 (41.6%) females. The most prevalent age group was 20 to 25years. One hundred and forty three (93%) of the participants were single. The most common blood group was O Rh positive, followed by A Rh positive then B Rh positive while AB Rh negative was the least. Majority of the participants have never donated blood. The minority who have ever donated blood, donated either once or twice and the donation was made for a family member or friend. Conclusion: Participants were found to have poor pattern of blood donation practices. Misconception, fear, cultural and religious influences deter people from practicing voluntary non-remunerated blood donation. Conducting awareness and enlightenment programs regularly will help to keep them well informed and motivated to practice voluntary non-remunerated blood donation.
