Blood lead level and its association with body mass index and obesity in China - Results from SPECT-China study

Abstract: We aimed to report environmental and blood lead level (BLL) in China, and investigate the relationship of BLL with body mass index (BMI) and obesity. 5558 subjects were enrolled from 16 sites in China. BLL was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. Obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. Median (interquartile range) of BLL was 44.00 μg/L (29.00–62.16) for men and 37.79 μg/L (25.13–54.35) for women, about twice higher than in U.S. population. Subjects in rural and high-economic-status areas had significantl… Show more

“…Environmental effects play important role in the development of metabolic disease. Our previous study has found potential relationships between blood lead and obesity in Chinese adults (Wang et al 2015a). Lead and cadmium have common routes via human bodies and sometimes have co-exposure effects on diseases Hambach et al 2013;Wang and Fowler 2008).…”

“…In USA, the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity had risen from 14.5% to 35.1% in adults [1], which is similar to growth seen in China from 14.6% to 32.3%, due to economic boom and lifestyle changes [2]. However, environmental factors are attributed to the rising prevalence of obesity, too.…”
