Blood Lead Surveillance and Exposure Sources Among Alaska Children

Abstract: Context: Nationally, the child lead poisoning prevention strategy focuses on children in low-income communities living in old housing with lead paint. In Alaska, however, only about 3% of existing homes were built before 1950 and 38% were built during 1950-1979. As such, lead paint in old housing is a less frequent source of exposure for Alaska children with elevated blood lead levels (EBLLs). “…This is the case in Alaska, USA [58], Canada [59][60][61], and Greenland [62]. In Alaskan children, the cause of high blood lead levels could be attributed to consumption of lead-contaminated game meat and hunting households in over half of cases examined [58]. Large numbers of birds (species of doves and ducks) shot in high-volume hunts (1000-2000 birds/hunter/day) are also given to local communities in Argentina who are subsequently exposed to ingested lead [63].…”

“…However, hunting with lead-based ammunition for personal consumption is a common practice in many non-European countries, and native and nonnative people who rely on wild game for their principal food intake are especially at risk from dietary lead exposure. This is the case in Alaska, USA [58], Canada [59][60][61], and Greenland [62]. In Alaskan children, the cause of high blood lead levels could be attributed to consumption of lead-contaminated game meat and hunting households in over half of cases examined [58].…”

“…If this revised level were to be recognized and adopted by other jurisdictions, it would enable action to be taken at an earlier stage to reduce children's future exposure to lead, especially from game meat. As a pertinent example warranting attention, Bressler et al (2019) reported that half of Alaskan children with blood levels >5 µgPb/dL were from homes that consumed lead-shot game meat.…”
