Blood noradrenaline and 5-HT levels in depressed women during amitriptyline or lithium treatment

Abstract: Noradrenaline levels and platelet and free serotonin concentrations were studied in depressed women in-patients (n=78) before and during amitriptyline (n=41) or lithium treatment (n=37). Pronounced monthly differences in platelet serotonin level have been shown in these subjects before treatment. In all clinical subgroups (neurotic, involutional, manic-depressive patients) a significant fall in platelet serotonin level was observed with amitriptyline medication while an increase was noted with lithium. No sign… Show more

“…Not all human studies of seasonal changes in function support our findings, however, and there is some disagreement across different studies when these changes occur. While most studies of normal humans showed lowest concentrations of either 5-HT or 5-HIAA in the Spring and highest concentrations during the Summer (Åsberg et al 1980;Brewerton et al 1988;Brewerton 1989;Brewerton et al 1993;Wirz-Justice and Wehr 1984), animal and human studies also report high peripheral 5-HT measures and CSF 5-HIAA concentrations in autumn (Arora et al 1984;Brewerton et al 1988; Carlsson et al Corona et al 1982;Maes et al 1995;Wirz-Justice and Richter 1979). Had CSF samples been obtained during July and August, we may have seen the same Summer peak as in other studies.…”

“…Chronic treatment of depressed patients with various antidepressants causes a decrease in the 5-HT levels of their platelets (Corona et al, 1982;Sarrias et al, 1987;Wagner et al, 1990); however, the 5-HT levels of postmortem brain tissues obtained from treated and untreated depressed patients were similar (Cheetham et al, 1989). In the more abundant studies with rats, chronic treatment with various antidepressants did not alter the 5-HT content of either the whole brain or various brain regions (Alpers and Himwich, 1972;Buss et al, 1980;Yoshida et al, 1989;Dewar et al, 1993).…”
