Blood platelet production: a novel approach for practical optimization

Abstract: In this article the worlds of blood management and the mathematical discipline of OR are brought together for the optimization of blood PLT production. This leads to simple nearly optimal blood PLT production policies that are suitable for practical implementation.

“…Special attention has been paid to platelets in the past decade. Haijema et al [23], Haijema et al [24] and van Dijk et al [25] develop a Markovian model to represent decisions on production and inventories of platelets. Multiple periods, special periods such as weekends and different types of demand are included in the model.…”

“…Several studies have documented the issues related to PLT inventory management and explored ways to reduce the outdate of PLT products. Various authors have used impressive computer models, mathematical equations, and data collection modalities to address inventory management issues 1‐4 . The basic principle of “first in, first out” 5 has been widely adopted to minimize outdating.…”

“…Haijema et al (2007) proposed a combined Markov dynamic programming and simulation approach for production management and inventory optimization of blood platelet and applied it to a Dutch blood bank. Haijema et al (2009) also studied the production and inventory management of blood platelets in breaks such as Easter and Christmas by applying stochastic dynamic programming and simulation. Van Dijk et al (2009) combined stochastic dynamic programming and simulation to optimize blood platelet production.…”
