Blood pressure response in 24 hours in patients with high blood pressure treated with two nifedipine formulations once a day

Abstract: A double-blind, comparative and prospective study with nifedipine once a day was undertaken, in patients with mild and moderate high blood pressure. Blood pressure was measured by mercury sphygmomanometer in two positions: resting and sitting at 3, 6 and 12 weeks of treatment and by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) over 24 h; both were carried out before and after the treatment and the uniformity in the pressure levels were obtained by means of the Smoothness Index. Fiftyfour patients were included … Show more

“…At the end of 8 weeks, the mean sitting office systolic blood pressure in the microgranule formulation group was 136 mmHg and, in the nifedipine GITS group, 133 mmHg ( P = 0.048). In another study, a group of 54 hypertensive patients were randomized to a microgranule formulation of nifedipine or nifedipine GITS 34. At the end of the 12-week study, a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure measurement was made with average daytime readings in the microgranule group of 109 mmHg compared to 104 mmHg in the nifedipine GITS group.…”

“…In some of them, ABPM devices are programmed to obtain BP measurements evenly spaced throughout the 24 h, with BP readings every 60, 30, 20 or 15 min [6,13,14]. In other centers, a different frequency of measures is scheduled during the daytime and the nighttime, with BP measurements programmed every 15,20 or 30 min during the day and every 20, 30, 40 or 60 min during night [15][16][17][18]. When using more frequent measurements per hour during the day than during the night, the calculation of 24-h SBP and DBP based on the average of all 24-h values introduces a bias related to the greater relative weight of the higher daytime over the lower night-time number of BP values.…”
