“…In contrast, Jeffery et al [25] found no correla tion between the number of transfusions and magnitude of the mixed lymphocyte re sponse. The phenomenon of prolonged renal allograft surivival following blood transfu sion was postulated by Van Es et al [4] to be immunologically nonspecific since RhLA product sharing between blood and kidney donors in rhesus monkeys was less than could be expected for immunologic enhance ment. Keown and Descamps [6] suggested a nonspecific RBC-mediated modulation of the immune response reflecting the RBCfilled macrophage's impaired antigen pro cessing and phagocytic function.…”

“…Whereas Horimi et al [29] showed that cytotoxic antibodies were not necessarily injurious to renal allotransplants, there was a slightly diminished graft survival rate in recipients manifesting warm reactive anti-T lymphocyte antibodies. In the rhesus monkey, Van Es et al [4] argued against B cell alloantibodies extending allograft sur vival, as no correlation was observed be tween positive B cell crossmatches and pro longed graft survival.…”

“…There is no doubt that the patients required more blood transfusions after the nephrectomy and there have been many recent suggestions that blood transfusion improves graft survival in patients (Festenstein, Sachs, Paris, Pegrum and Moorehead, 1976;Opelz and Terasaki, 1976;van Hooff, Kalff and van Poelgeaste, 1976) and in animals (van Es, Marquet, van Rood, Kalff and Balner, 1977). We have noted that the incidence of urinary tract infection is lower amongst our nephrectomised patients (Douglas, Clarke, Kennedy, McEvoy and McGeown, 1974) than in other series (Hamshere, Chisholm and Shackman, 1974;Steen, Pedersen and Vejlsgaard, 1975).…”

“…Furthermore, a randomized prospective study in rhesus monkeys that received five blood transfusions over a 3-month period prior to transplantation and Standard immunosuppression after transplantation showed a significant fourfold Prolongation of graft survival ( Fig. 2) (van Es et al, 1977).…”
