Blubber fat deposition in mysticeti whales

Abstract: Blubber fats from six fin whales, four sei whales, and one humpbacked whale taken in Nova Scotian waters have been studied. Dorsal, lateral, and ventral samples were compared for thickness, fat contents of inner and outer layers, and the iodine values of the recovered fats. The concept that in "fat" mysticeti whales the iodine value is higher in the inner blubber than in the outer blubber was supported by the results. It is concluded that iodine value fluctuations in one animal in a fattening stage represent s… Show more

“…This thin connective tissue layer was not found in the histological sections used in this study. Similarly, histological inspection did not reveal the presence of any discernible collagenous layer interrupting the hypodermis, as has been described in Nova Scotian sei whales (Ackman et al, 1975). In this study, southern right whales possessed uninterrupted collagen bundles surrounded by large amounts of adipose tissue that occurred below the dermis.…”

“…It may, therefore, be possible that this innermost layer only becomes evident during the fattening/feeding stages of the animal's nutritional cycle, being comparable to the ''isterlag'' or ''leaf fat'' described by Heyerdahl (1932), Tveraaen (1935), and Pedersen (1950) in very fat Antarctic baleen whales. Ackman et al (1975) have likened the layer of collagenous and elastic fibers, which interrupts the hypodermal layer of the integument of Nova Scotian sei whales (also caught during the summer feeding season), to this layer.…”

“…Histological and biochemical evidence from stranded specimens suggest that blubber is stratified in cetaceans (Ackman et al, 1965(Ackman et al, , 1975aLockyer et al, 1984;Koopman et al, 1996;Koopman et al, 2002;Struntz et al, 2004). For example, in fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), described the vertical stratification of lipid content.…”
