“…For the purposes of this review, all three types will be considered together. It should be noted that additional types of benign melanocytic nevi such as: blue nevi, 32 Spitz nevi 33 and deep penetrating nevi 34 exist, however, are relatively less common and will not be discussed in detail. Dysplastic nevi will be considered separately below.…”

“…Common blue nevus: A blue nevus is a melanocytic lesion that is derived from dermal melanocytes that do not migrate to the epidermis during embryogenesis. They are most commonly found on the scalp, sacral area, and distal extensor extremities, and they appear as a well-circumscribed, darkly pigmented papule, often with a blue hue (Sugianto et al, 2016). This blue hue is due to the Tyndall effect, which is the preferential absorption of longer wavelengths (red) and the scattering of shorter wavelengths (blue) by the dermal melanin (Sugianto et al, 2016).…”

“…Malignant blue nevi are a rare type of malignant tumor of melanocytes that can arise in cellular blue nevi. These tumors have histological features of melanomas, including atypical mitoses and necrosis, along with features of typical cellular blue nevi (6). These tumors are most commonly found on the head, particular the scalp, and are over 1 cm in diameter.…”
