Blueberry treatment attenuates D‐galactose‐induced oxidative stress and tissue damage in rat liver

Abstract: These results show that BB restored liver pro-oxidant status together with histopathological amelioration by acting as an anti-oxidant (radical scavenger) itself without affecting mRNA expressions of anti-oxidant enzymes in GAL-treated rats.

“…D‐galactose‐induced aging model could partly mimic the pathophysiological changes of natural aging process (Cui et al., ; Lu et al., ). Our results showed that D‐galactose treatment for 8 weeks resulted in remarkable oxidative damage in mice serum and liver, which was consistent with the previous reports (Coban et al., ; Zhang et al., ). However, administration of both oat and buckwheat vinegar products revealed comparably favorable antagonistic effect on the oxidative damage in mice serum and liver.…”

“…Experimental evidence in animals indicates that galactose‐induced aging can be prevented by a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables . Although there was in our study a general tendency of lower hip fracture rates in high consumers of fruits and vegetables, there was still a persistent elevated rate of hip fracture in women consuming high amounts of milk.…”

“…We proposed that blueberry consumption reduced the side effects caused by etanercept with its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation activities (Coban et al 2014;Esposito et al 2014). Thus, the side effects were investigated with the combination therapy of etanercept and blueberry.…”
