BNCI Horizon 2020 – Towards a Roadmap for Brain/Neural Computer Interaction

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper, we present BNCI Horizon 2020, an EU Coordination and Support Action (CSA) that will provide a roadmap for brain-computer interaction research for the next years, starting in 2013, and aiming at research efforts until 2020 and beyond. The project is a successor of the earlier EUfunded Future BNCI CSA that started in 2010 and produced a roadmap for a shorter time period. We present how we, a consortium of the main European BCI research groups as well as companies and end user representat… Show more

“…To verify the validity of the proposed framework and method, the public dataset 008-2014 (Riccio et al, 2013) published on the BNCI-Horizon website (Brunner et al, 2014) by IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia, is used. Additionally, an own dataset with the same experimental conditions is generated.…”

“…First for a passive modality, real P300 ERP templates obtained from a public dataset, are superimposed into the generated EEG stream of 4 subjects. A set of template ERPs is acquired from the Subject Number 8 of the public dataset 008-2014 [ 69 ] published on the BNCI-Horizon website [ 70 ] by IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia. The experimental protocol implemented to produce this dataset is the same as the one described in Section 3.6.1 .…”

“…The latter application domain, for instance, regards the prediction of emergency braking based on the ongoing EEG signals of the driver (see [28] for a first investigation with a simulator and [29] for a replication on real roads). More examples and a description of possible future developments can be found in the roadmap of brain/neural computer interaction (BNCI [30]). The actual implementation of BCI technology to infer users' intentions and to use implicit information in real-world applications is still a great challenge, especially when it comes to integrating implicit measures of perception with cognitive and emotional responses.…”
