Corporate philanthropy is a subset of the corporate social responsibility. To improve the image of company as a socially responsible organization, corporate philanthropy activities need to be disclosed to stakeholders. There are several factors influencing the corporate philanthropy disclosure. In the current literature, there is still a lack of initiative to systematically review the disclosure of corporate philanthropy in annual reports. The aim of this study is to analyze the existing literature on factors influencing the corporate philanthropy disclosure by Malaysian companies. This paper was guided by the four phase of PRISMA Statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) review method and utilized Scopus and Web of Science as the main journal databases. This paper identified 17 related studies (out of 230 papers) that could be analyzed systematically. Most importantly, the review managed to formulate four main themes i.e., factors influencing the corporate philanthropy disclosure, namely ownership structure, board of directors' characteristics, financial performance and 'others'. These four themes further resulted in a total of 25 sub-themes. Finally, a number of recommendations were presented at the end of this research which corresponded to potential significant opportunities for future research, either quantitative or qualitative study. This study offers a guide for future studies and thus hopes to encourage more scholarly interest for this intriguing phenomenon at the crossroads of business and society. In the review, the studies included only articles that studied on corporate disclosure in annual reports of Malaysian companies. A comparison between two or more countries can also be conducted in contributing to the body of knowledge.

Reporting is a means of communication for companies to their respective stakeholders. The literature on non‐financial reporting has mostly focused on operational, Carbon Discloser Project (CDP), and environmental disclosure to firm performance. This reporting and disclosure approach adopted by companies in their sustainability practices appears to be a normative approach. However, there has been a growing demand by stakeholders to incorporate proactive approach in business activities. To meet that, green innovation practices (GIPs) has been integrated as a new element in environmental reporting, thereby reflecting the proactiveness of companies in their adoption of green innovation reporting (GIR). The objective of this study is to advocate for greater disclosure on sustainability reporting by incorporating the GIPs of companies and substantial, sustainable development goal contribution, along with the moderation of the newly upgraded ISO 56002‐2019 innovation management system. Adoption of green innovation reporting and ISO 56002‐2019 will enhance the level of transparency of business activities and create greater stakeholder confidence along with enhancing the firm's sustainable development of goal performance. Furthermore, an extensive literature review was undertaken to create a GIR framework (i.e., product, process, service and technology) for firms to integrate GIPs into sustainability reporting. The conceptual model proposed the adoption of green innovation reporting and ISO 56002‐2019 innovation management system to firm sustainable development goal. This needs to be injected into the sustainable reporting of companies to reflect their innovativeness, actual sustainable business practices and sustainable development goal performance for the firm.

Determinants of environmental, social, and governance disclosure: A systematic literature review

The popularity of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing or socially responsible investing is pushing private sectors to improve their ESG performance. Stakeholders, namely, investors, are relying on firms' environmental, social, and governance disclosures (ESGD) to evaluate their ESG performance and strategize their investment decision‐making. Since firms have substantial discretionary power in deciding the quantity and quality of ESGD, understanding the drivers and motivations of ESGD is paramount. This study examines the literature on the determinants of ESGD, and 36 articles published in a period spanning from 2006 to 2022 were analyzed and synthesized via a systematic literature review approach. Ninety‐one researchers from 30 countries contributed to these studies. Of these studies, 28% perform cross‐country investigations. This study found that although there is no single underpinning theory for ESGD, ESGD determinant studies are well supported by multiple theoretical frameworks, such as stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory, and institutional theory. This study reveals many factors that have an impact on ESGD, such as natural disasters, political and legal systems, ownership structure, board characteristics, and the CEO's characteristics. This study contributed to the burgeon of literature on ESG by offering valuable insights into the antecedents to ESG performance and facilitating future enhancements of a better ESGD framework. Lastly, this study also reveals future research directions for scholars to enrich the burgeoning literature in ESG.
