Body composition determination by bioimpedance: an update

Abstract: Body composition by bioimpedance is gaining acceptance in nutrition, hemodialysis, gerontology and sports medicine. Body fat analyzers that have been validated by comparison with dual x-ray absorptiometry could be useful to general practitioners, nutritionists and cardiologists.

“…Since only water is able to conduct the current, total body impedance is a measure of total body water. If water is assumed to be a constant part of the lean body mass, then bioelectrical impedance can be predictive of lean body (fat-free) mass (8,32,33). Fluid imbalances are a significant limitation to the use of BIA in clinical evaluation.…”

“…These proxies of body fat are related to clinical health outcomes (1,7) . More sophisticated measures of body composition, such as bioimpedance measurements, are also used to assess body fat and fat-free mass (8) . However, in large population-based studies or studies in remote settings, neither option is feasible.…”

“…Moreover, skeletal muscle mass by bioelectrical impedance analyzer, a relatively simple, quick, and noninvasive method, was found to be reasonably accurate compared with dual X-ray absorptiometry in a healthy population. 26 Third, we did not assess skeletal muscle function, which may affect the relationship described herein. Fourth, information on activity levels was self-reported.…”
