Body composition in mature Parda de Montaña and Pirenaica suckler cows

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to study the body composition of mature females from two breeds of suckler cattle (Parda de Montaña and Pirenaica) with different origin and purpose. In Exp. 1, body condition score (BCS) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) were measured in 64 cows in a 2x2 factorial arrangement (Parda de Montaña vs. Pirenaica breed and dry vs. lactating cows). SFT was similar across genotypes (P>0.05) but physiological stage affected this trait (P<0.05). SFT values were concomitant with BCS, al… Show more

“…At calving, interaction between PRE and POST treatments tended to affect height at withers (P = 0.05), because LO-LO primiparous cows were shorter than LO-HI cows (P < 0.01), but no differences remained between HI-HI and HI-LO heifers (P > 0.10). Measures observed in this study at calving ranged from 94% to 97% of those described by Álvarez-Rodríguez et al (2009a) in adult cows from the same breed, in which maturity is reached at around 4.5 yr (Cano et al 2016).…”

“…However, both traits were significantly greater at mo in heifers from the HIGH than those from the MOD treatment, which confirms their different growth pattern. Height at withers at calving was 97% of that described by Álvarez-Rodríguez, et al [30] (131 cm) for mature dry cows of the same breeds, and therefore skeletal development at first calving could be considered as adequate for all groups. External pelvic area at 15 mo was smaller in PI heifers, which might reflect a later pelvic development, and in those of the MOD group, but these differences were offset during gestation and had no further effects.…”
