Bone Loss and Caries in Rats Infected with Human Streptococci

Abstract: Gnotobiotic rats infected orally with various human cariogenic Streptococcus mutans strains or a Streptococcus salivarius strain exhibited greater alveolar loss of bone than control rats. The same strains also showed considerable differences in their cariogenic activity. There was a positive correlation between the extent of bone loss and carious surfaces.

“…Smooth surface caries are dependent on plaque formation [McDonald and Stookey, 1978] and S. mu tans, when cultured with sucrose forms glucans and levans which facilitate plaque formation [Mandel, 1979]. S. mutans is able to initiate fissure caries in gnotobiotic rats [Duany et al, 1971], However, the ad dition of S. mutans to the oral cavity of rats already infected with other microor ganisms does not alter the incidence of sulcal caries [Newbrun, 1977]. This was al so true for rats in our study.…”

“…The two enzyme pools were dialyzed extensively against distilled water and centrifuged twice at 3,000 x g for 15 min, and the supernatants were lyophilized and stored at -60°C. The specific activities of the 0.2 and 0.4 M fractions were 12 and 322 dextransucrase units (26) per mg of protein, respectively.…”
