Bone metastases of medulloblastoma in childhood; correlation with flow cytometric DNA analysis

Abstract: Thirty children with medulloblastoma who were treated between 1980 and 1986 are presented. Flow cytometric DNA analysis using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues showed that 15 were DNA aneuploid, 13 diploid and 2 tetraploid. After homogeneous treatment with a combination of radical resection and radiation therapy, patients with DNA aneuploid medulloblastoma showed significantly better outcome (p = 0.003). Among these 30 patients, 6 (20%) had bone metastases of medulloblastoma during a minimum of 2-ye… Show more

“…Unfortunately, this success has also yielded an increased number of recurrent and metastatic CNS lesions that are often resistant to radiotherapy and multiple chemotherapeutic agents (Allen et al, 1996;Chou et al, 1995;Patrice et al, 1995). Extraneural metastases pose an additional challenge in the treatment of PNET-MB (Berger et al, 1991;Brutschin and Culver, 1973;Campbell et al, 1984;Duffner and Cohen, 1981;Hoffman and Duffner, 1985;Tomita et al, 1990;Vieco et al, 1989). “…Although MB is easily localized by CT, MRI allows a more sensitive detection of the primary tumour and its relationship to adjacent CNS structures [10]. In MB patients, the following nuclear medicine procedures are performed: bone scan [11]; 99m Tc-HMPAO or 99m Tc ÁECD in neurological complications like mutism [12,13]; 111 In-DTPA for the proof of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) flow [14]; 123 I-MIBG [15], 201 Tl [16,17],…”
