Bone morphology after delayed tooth replantation - case series

Abstract: The purpose of this report was to describe the morphological changes in the alveolar bone after delayed replantation of avulsed teeth using three dimensional cone-beam computed tomography in 11 during the time period 2003-2012. The radiographic observations revealed the following: Delayed replantation results in ankylosis-related replacement root resorption; the resorption is delayed or arrested around the cervical area superior to the alveolar crest. The buccal bone is reduced in thickness but not the palatal… Show more

“…Tsukiboshi and Tsukiboshi observed considerable morphological changes in the alveolar bone after delayed replantation of avulsed teeth with subsequent ankylosis in a case series of patients younger than 18 at the time of trauma. Using cone beam computer tomography (CBCT), they detected a reduction of buccal bone thickness.…”

“…Using cone beam computer tomography (CBCT), they detected a reduction of buccal bone thickness. Buccal bone resorption extended approximately to the root canal space of the ankylosed root, while no significant resorption of the palatal bone was observed . In the present case, root resorption was minor and the amount of bone destruction is assumed to be minor as well.…”

“…It is therefore important to remove a root filling. A recent case study did not perform root filling removal, and favorable alveolar bone development failed . Lin et al.…”

“…Studies on diagnosis of ankylosis using CT are limited (Kitai et al, 2003;Kirziolu et al;Paris et al;Chae & Paeng;Gault et al) and even more using CBCT (Balaji;Tsukiboshi & Tsukiboshi, 2014). However, for identifying the root region extent and exact location where ankylosis is present, the examination by three-dimensional imaging is essential (Paris et al; Gault et al; Silva), especially in severe cases of ankylosed molar teeth (Berl et al, 2012).…”
