Bone scan in detection of biological activity in nonhypertrophic fracture nonunion

Abstract: Biological activity of the fracture site is very important factor in treatment planning of fracture nonunion. If no biological activity is detected, then an autologous bone graft can be supplemented or osteogenic supplementations, such as bone morphogenetic protein is given. If biological activity is present, then secure fixation is sufficient to achieve bony union. Biological activity of nonunions is usually assessed by conventional radiographs. The presence of callus formation is usually assessed as the pres… Show more

“…There have been reports of qualitative evaluation of nonunion by bone scintigraphy [9,10], but to our knowledge, ours is the rst report to quantify bone SPECT in nonunion. We found that SUV can be quanti ed from bone SPECT at the nonunion site.…”

“…In some cases, biological activity exists around the nonunion without callus in X-ray ndings. Bone scintigraphy is considered an important examination for determining biological activity [8][9][10][11][12]. Uptake in bone scintigraphy re ects blood ow and new bone formation [13,14].…”

“…Niikura et al mentioned that poor callus visualization (non-hypertrophic appearance) did not always indicate lack of biological activity; however, it is possible to evaluate the presence of biological activity by bone scintigraphy [12]. Another report indicated that uptake in bone scintigraphy reflects blood flow and new bone formation [13]. Uptake in bone scintigraphy was observed in both two cases, that is why we judged they had sufficient biological activity.…”
