Bone turnover markers, anterior pituitary and gonadal hormones, and bone mass evaluation using quantitative computed tomography in ankylosing spondylitis

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine bone mineral density (BMD) distribution in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) using quantitative computed tomography (QCT), to study bone turnover and anterior pituitary and gonadal hormonal axis in AS, and to look for correlations between BMD, bone remodeling markers and gonadal and anterior pituitary hormones. Forty-three male consecutive patients with AS were enrolled prospectively [mean (SD) age of 36.4 (11.3) years (range: 17-67) and mean disease duration of 6.8 (5.2)… Show more

“…Patients with AS had significant lower serum levels of osteocalcin and higher levels of serum T, LH and PRL (El Maghraoui et al 2005). Recently, we analysed the status of the hypothalamic dopaminergic tone using metoclopramide (MTC) test and the prevalence of pituitary adenomas in SSc.…”

“…Non-invasive assessment of biochemical bone turnover markers (BTM) may provide more information about the pathophysiology of osteoporosis [1416]. So far, conflicting data have been published about the relation between BTM, BMD, and disease activity in AS [4, 9, 14, 15, 1721]. …”

“…Furthermore, measuring only hip BMD by DXA may not be sufficient to identify all patients with AS-related osteoporosis since bone loss may primarily occur in the spine [23]. Currently, quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is considered to be the best technique to measure spinal BMD in patients with advanced AS, since this technique can measure only trabecular BMD [17, 24, 26]. However, QCT is expensive and has a high radiation dose compared to DXA [27].…”

“…Because SHPT is the most prevalent painful syndrome that affects HD and CKD patients [15], we evaluated mineral metabolism within FS groups. FS has been associated with either high [16] or normal to low [17] bone turnover diseases in non-CKD patients. Patients with higher physical impairment had significantly higher serum PTH levels, but we could not observe any association between severity of FS and serum levels of alkaline phosphatase, calcium, or phosphorus as seen by others [11].…”
