Sodium‐storage performance of pyrite FeS2 is greatly improved by constructing various FeS2‐based nanostructures to optimize its ion‐transport kinetics and structural stability. However, less attention has been paid to rapid capacity degradation and electrode failure caused by the irreversible phase‐transition of intermediate NaxFeS2 to FeS2 and polysulfides dissolution upon cycling. Under the guidance of theoretical calculations, coupling FeS2 nanoparticles with honeycomb‐like nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC) nanosheet supported single‐atom manganese (SAs Mn) catalyst (FeS2/SAs Mn@NC) via atomic‐interface engineering is proposed to address above challenge. Systematic electrochemical analyses and theoretical results unveil that the functional integration of such two type components can significantly enhance ionic conductivity, accelerate charge transfer efficiency, and improve Na+‐adsorption capability. Particularly, SAs Mn@NC with Mn‐Nx coordination center can reduce the decomposition barrier of Na2S and NaxFeS2 to further accelerate reversible phase transformation of Fe/Na2S→NaFeS2→FeS2 and polysulfides decomposition. As predicted, such FeS2/SAs Mn@NC showcases outstanding rate capability and fascinating cyclic durability. A sequence of kinetic studies and ex situ characterizations provide the comprehensive understanding for ion‐transport kinetics and phase‐transformation process. Its practical use is further demonstrated in sodium‐ion full cell and capacitor with impressive electrochemical capability and excellent energy‐density output.

Nowadays, sodium‐ion batteries are considered the most promising large‐scale energy storage systems (EESs) due to the low cost and wide distribution of sodium sources as well as the similar working principle to lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Therefore, screening suitable materials with high abundance, low cost, and excellent reliability and modified with different strategies based on them is the key point for the development of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). In addition, the ideal anodes with high abundance, and low cost elements also greatly influence the cost of SIB systems, determining the large‐scale application. Herein, recent advances in carbon, iron, manganese, and phosphorus‐based anodes of various types, such as hard carbon, iron oxides, manganese oxides, and red phosphorus, are highlighted. The various sodium storage mechanisms and structure‐function properties for these four types of materials are summarized and analyzed in detail. Considering the commercial profits that the EESs can bring and their suitability for mass electrode manufacturing, the participation of high‐abundance and low‐cost elements such as Fe, Mn, C, and P is convincing and encouraging.

Iron sulfides with high theoretical capacity confront the challenges of low rate capability and severe capacity fading for sodium storage, which are mainly caused by poor electron/ion transport kinetics and drastic volume fluctuations during cycling. Herein, to mitigate these obstacles, a multi‐step synthetic tactic involving solvothermal, carbonization, and subsequent sulfurization is put forward for the construction of wire‐like structure by confining Fe7S8 particles in porous N‐doped carbon framework (denoted as Fe7S8/PNC) using zinc iron nitrilotriacetate as template. By partially substituting Fe3+ with Zn2+ in the metal coordination complex, the porous structure of coordination complex derived carbon framework can be regulated through pore structure engineering of Zn nanodroplets. The desired porous and robust core/shell structure can not only afford favorable electron/Na+ transport paths and additional active sites for Na+ storage, but also provide reinforced structural integrity of interior Fe7S8 particles by retarding the pulverization and buffering the mechanical stress against volume fluctuations. As anode for sodium‐ion batteries, the optimal Fe7S8/PNC delivers a high reversible capacity (743 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), superior rate capability (553 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1), and long‐term cycling stability (602 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 with 98.5% retention after 1000 cycles).
